Toone Elementary School offers an Extended School Day (ESD) program. This program is first offered to students who have been identified as being below the proficient level in reading and/or math or as needing extra reinforcement of various skills and TN Academic Standards. Several methods are used to determine students who would benefit from extended school day. Those methods are as follows: Spring TCAP scores for grades 3-8, STAR Assessment for grades K-8, and teacher recommendation. If there are any remaining spots in the program, they are offered to all TES students. When the program is full, parents wishing to add their student to the waiting list can contact their child’s teacher.
ESD sessions take place from 3:05 to 5:35 on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Students receive 30 minutes of homework time as well as enrichment opportunities in areas such as reading, math, science, technology, arts and physical activity. A new one hour Friday session focuses on foundational reading for kindergarten and first grade students who are referred by their teacher.
ESD usually begins in September and ends before TCAP testing in April. As a culminating activity, all students who attend at least 75% of their sessions are eligible for a celebration at the end of the school year.
